The Fool
As the very first card in the Tarot deck, The Fool plays a significant role. It is numbered 0 (zero), so full of potential yet not manifest.
When we encounter The Fool, it represents ourselves – and a new beginning.
Perhaps a new role, a new journey, a new relationship, a new country! In any new beginning you can think of, you may be represented by The Fool.
What do we need to commence a new beginning? Courage and Trust. What a dilemma! We need to take a risk, we need to trust our intuition, we need to have courage to step into the unknown. Yet, the payoff is rarely disappointing.
We see The Fool approaching a cliff, seemingly oblivious of the danger, showing optimism and trust in the universe. He carries very little, showing he travels light, with very little baggage. His dog barks to warn him of danger, representing his own intuition. The white rose is a symbol of naivety and innocence.
As a psychological symbol, this card reminds us that we can grow through experience and allow ourselves to be free of fear and inhibition.
Spiritually, we are exploring our destiny and having the courage to begin a journey without knowing the destination or outcome.
In a practical sense, every morning when we get out of bed, we are “The Fool”. We may have “busy and important’ lives to live, we may have planned our day in great detail. Yet, we never know when the unexpected will happen, when we need to step into the unknown. One phone call, one news item, can change the trajectory of our day, even our lives.
Living like The Fool gives us the mindset of flexibility, the ability to accept change even when we want to resist it.
The Fool is the “Master Change Agent” – he initiates change, responds positively to it, and embraces it. For this, his life is less stressful, going with the flow, understanding that destiny is often shrouded in mystery and uncertainty.
The Fool teaches us that life is unpredictable. We can fight against that or embrace the rich unpredictability and enjoy the adventure that is ours alone.
